Your wedding day is supposed to be the biggest day of your life and all about you – the happy couple. But more and more people are realising that in this life, it’s never just about us. That’s why green weddings are becoming more common, with more couples looking to celebrate their special day without having a detrimental impact on the environment. Every event carries with it a potential for environmental consequences. There’s energy consumption, emissions and waste to think about to begin with, as well as the indirect impact of renting cars, cleaning products and so on. With a little thought, however, it really is possible to significantly reduce the impact of your wedding, especially here in Portugal. This is a country blessed with an abundance of natural food, light and energy. It’s possible to celebrate your wedding at a venue where almost all the food and drink you’ll consume has been grown on site or at least sourced nearby. In other words, it comes from the farm to your table. Delicious and colourful local fruits, regional wines and a natural outdoor environment all add to the low impact, green effect of your wedding. Get married under the olive groves or vines, using local produce and you’re also cutting back on waste products, transfer costs, and packing, which are a serious concern at some wedding events. Portugal is also blessed with a huge range of gorgeous wildflowers that can be picked on the very morning of the big day. There’s no costly florists bills and transport to worry about. It’s all grown, picked and arranged on site. Using locally sourced ingredients and produce is also a real boost for the local economy, meaning that you can offset some of the footprint of the big event against the benefits this will have for your chosen destination. With so much natural and organic beauty, Portugal is truly a dream green wedding destination.
Here at The Wedding Portugal, as you might expect, we love anything that’s both wedding and Portugal related. Which is why we were delighted to attend the recent ‘Unforgettable Wedding Gowns’ exhibition curated by Hubert de Givenchy in our very own beautiful city of Évora.
The show, hosted by the Duchess of Cadaval at the palace’s very own private church in Évora, was conceived by Givenchy and brings together some of the most stunning wedding dresses in history, by names including Dior, Philippe Venet and Carolina Herrera. Of course, there were some pieces there by Givenchy himself, one of the masters of haute couture and designer of some of the most iconic wedding dresses of the 20th and 21st centuries. His masterpieces include gowns for Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and the Duchess of Windsor.
A close personal friend of the Duchess of Cadaval, Givenchy has brought together these gowns in the stunning Church of St John the Baptist in Évora. Dating back to 1711, the church is decorated in beautiful blue and white tiles, of the kind that can be found all over Portugal. The church’s stunning gold main altar was the inspiration for Givenchy’s collection which will run until 7 September. If you’re lucky enough to get the chance to visit, we highly recommend it.
It really blends together and shows off what a perfect combination weddings and Portugal’s beautiful venues can make, and is great inspiration for anyone thinking of getting married here. It certainly inspired us.
Perched out on the western, Atlantic edge of Europe, Portugal can often get overlooked in favour of its more prominent cousins Spain and France. But therein lies the country’s secret. Portugal is home to some of the most beautiful scenery, stunning whitewashed towns and breathtaking coastline, and a lot of it remains virtually undiscovered.
It’s almost as if Portugal is so confident in its own beauty it feels no real need to shout about it. It sits there, safe in the knowledge that all who visit will fall in love at first glance.
The main draw is obviously the capital, Lisbon. Once the centre of a mighty global empire, Lisbon wears its history with pride. Gorgeous palaces, elegant boulevards, and colourful barrios jostle for attention, and it’s all just a stone’s throw from the beach.
In the north, The UNESCO World Heritage Site of downtown Porto sits opposite the port cellars that house perhaps the country’s most famous export. All around these two gems lie miles of quietly spectacular countryside. From the rolling farmland of Alentejo to the mountainous Serra de Estrela and Silver Coast, Portugal never disappoints.
With such a vast selection of stunning destinations, plus magical venues that include mountain top villages, olive groves, golden beaches and chic palaces it’s a unique and extraordinary place for a wedding. As if this wasn’t enough, Portugal also happens to be one of the most affordable countries in Europe, meaning your budget goes a lot further here than elsewhere.
It’s not surprising that so many people who come here not knowing what to expect end up staying or at least coming back time after time. Portugal’s enchanting and unobtrusive beauty is capable of bewitching visitors, it certainly worked on us here at The Wedding Portugal.
Have a look through the site to discover the many stunning venues and destinations where you can get married in Portugal.
